If you are in USA, if it is 3.9litre V8 and also manual, there should be a slot cast into the bell housing pretty well as you describe. Yes as Mike says L-R can't trust the US market to put in and take out wading plugs so thats why you get a slot! and it doesn't fill up too much and is slow to drain. After off-roading dig around inside the slot with a lolly stick (in UK lolly is flavoured iced water on wooden stick for kids) and clear out any debris. Just changed my manual NAS90 (1995 V8) for auto box and although the clutch had some surface rust there appeared to be no damage. Keep it clean and carry on Land Rovering!
