97 Disco Starting

From a cold start, the engine runs up to prox. 2,000 rpm before settling down to
down to about 1,000 rpm idle. After 3 or 4 minutes it goes to prox. 740 rpm.
My concern is that bounce to 2,000 right at start. Dealer says it's computer controlled and
normal. I disagree. Must be quite hard on a dead cold engine to do that; also, no car I've ever owned has
behaved like that, even before advent of fuel injection and digital controls.
Anybody with suggestions or comments. I'd appreciate it.
