It has been many years so my memory is a little fuzzy but as I recall, the Nicholson method to remove the axle stub broken off at the differential spline is to remove both axles. Insert a strong magnet on a stiff rod from the "bad" side till it is centered and stuck on the broken stub. From the "good" side insert a long piece of 1/2 inch flat bar, small enough that it will slide past the pin in the center of the diff. (this is were my memory is fuzzy, is it a pin). Tap on the flat bar once you have wiggled it through the center of the diff. and to the broken stub. The broken stubb comes out of the splines and is removed with the magnet.
