Look what kind of smoke is it! If there is some white-blue smoke when cold everything is OK. If you find hard black smoke when accelerating or full opened throtle - fuel pump is not set correctly or injectors are worn out and do not jet fuel correctly. If you have starting problems, colour of smoke is hard grey-black compression may be to low (worn engine). Anyway, 2.25 diesel of your IIa is rather the older one and it may smoke a little when cold (white-blue) and a little black when working hard but not to much.
