Hi. I have a '94 Disco...acquired about 4 mo ago, 87k, now 93k. I was getting about 10-11mpg both city/highway. What worked for me was to replace the TPS (throttle position sensor) and the vacuum advance unit. These two things together boosted the mpg to now about 13 mpg city and 16-17 mpg highway, and that's winter in NY, where we have to MTBE gas. So maybe even better in the warmer weather.

TPS is easy to replace, but expensive..$150 or so. Vac advance is about $100 if you shop around. Fairly easy to replace yourself. To see if the vac advance is shot, pull the vacuum tube that comes from the distributor, off at the plenum rubber fitting. With the engine running, suck on the tube. The idle should change noticeably. With the engine off, suck on the tube, and it should hold a vacuum indefinitely. If either of these doesn't work right, the vac advance diaphragm is shot...and that'll reduce your mpg for sure, especially the highway mpg. Replacement on mine was done without opening the distributor, but needing a T-15 torx tool, and a bit of tricky twisting to get it in to the back screw.

These two can both be checked very easily by the dealer if you don't want to do it yourself.

Good luck.
