I've been told that the auto is a good combination for the
TDi because the revs of the motor can build up good boost
to supply torque. Compared to a manual which must be in
the right gear to get the right revs, if you let the RPMs
fall, you don't get the low down response that you need
in sandy conditions.

So my conclusion is - the turbo diesel is best mated to
the auto, especially in sandy conditions where torque matters.
