Defender in the US beyond 1997 ?

Posted by Liam Scanlan on September 23, 1997 at 22:31:26:

As most of you know, the reason Defender 90s have been expensive
in the US is because of the Truck-with-2-doors import tarriffs that was
meant to shield US light truck manufacturers from tough Japanese light
truck competition. US light truck manufacturers were supposed to use
the extra breathing space / cash to really develop some hot new technologies.
Of course, what *actually* resulted was that (1) US light truck manufacturers got a little fatter/lazier (2) Japanese light trucks got more competitive, although they can't truly compete fairly (e.g. The Toyota Tacoma) with that tarriff.

Question:
Might LR squeeze another 2 doors into the Defender 90, put in air-bags and side-impact bars, then sell them again in US?
I have heard no such plans, but would welcome such a development.
Your thoughts?
