RR Classic 1989 Running Problem

Posted by Alan on November 12, 2006 at 06:28:24:

Hi, I have RR Classic 1989 which used to be a 3.5 but now has a 3.9 Rover V8 in it. I didnt do the engine swap and dont know the mileage / condition of the new engine.

It takes its time to fire up and loses power after a bit of time running, misfiring causing the engine to rock in the bay.

There is a ticking and hissing coming from the front of the left bank. If I disconnect each spark plug individually each one changes the note a little but the front left bank, cylinder 7, gives a more noticable change in engine sound than all the rest.

I have fitted new plugs, leads, dis cap and rotor arm. Some of the old plugs were very black thickly coated and oily. Old leads were 7mm, new leads are 8mm. Seemed to improve running but after about 8 miles when I hit the motorway the problem showed itself again, running rough and woulnt go over 50mph. When I got off the motorway it seemed ok again.

Could anyone tell me what the best course of diagnosis is to route out this problem, or better still does anyone know exactly what this is? lol

Thanks, Alan
