I'm no mechanic, but I think your battery light(dash) would be on if the alternator is bad. I had a similar problem on my classic. You might try the old school method and just yank off the positive terminal on the battery and see if it will operate off the alt. alone.. If so check or replace the connector from the tach. wire. Otherwise, I have no earthly idea! Also, I heard years ago that pulling the positive termal as an alternator check was not good for the alternator. However, the local alternator, starter rebuild shop assured me that was not a problem. Puller beware.
