Never worked on 24v FFR but your message reads "short journeys" "all ancillaries on" which charging circuits don't like. Your'e taking a lot of load to start the engine and then continuing the load with lights etc. Maybe the generator can cope with the load. Is it a generator or alternator, I would guess generator in which case will not produce as many amps at low engine revs as an alternator????
Check voltage across battery at start-up, running no ancillaries and all ancillaries then do it again with enough engine revs to produce good charging current. There is a military L-R club in UK don't know if they have web-site.
