First let me say that I am a Canadian currently living in Australia so should have the perspective that you are looking for.

The Disco is easy to work on. Parts tend to be expensive both in Australia and NA if you need to buy original. Also they can be hard to find. You can mail order within a day however.

In NA a J**P is a lot cheaper parts wise (old ones anyway) and parts are easy to find. Also there is a chance that the local garage has seen one before. It would be similar to having a Toy**ta here in Aus.

The problem with the J**Ps is that the frames aren't built strong enough for long term off roading. It depends on what you are planning. If it is mainly road touring get a regular car. The amount of places that you "need" a four wheel drive in the US and Canada is much less than here n Aus. The back road are usually much better maintained.
