You are right about the direction that Land Rover is taking - all to do with market forces. The improvement in overall build quality is to be welcomed though. I personally don't mind if Land Rover caters also for the soft end of the market as long as they keep producing one real heavy duty work vehicle - i.e. the Defender. Something that combines true ability with strength and, above all, reliability with a minimum of frills and electronic gadgetry. Super on-road performance and comfort is not the issue. There are fewer and fewer models of 'real working 4wd's' left - in Australia it is really only the Defender, someToyota Land Cruisers and some Nissan Patrol (the Patrol 2.8 turbo diesel wagon though is horrible off-road - even less low rev power than the LR turbo-diesels and terribly 'jerky'). The latter keep getting bigger and heavier which really is not what it is all about. It will indeed be interesting to see what the Defender's replacement is - let's hope that it does not follow down the RR-Disco-Freelander route.
