I agree about the attitude bit about Land Rover. It's a bit like surfing - it is more soul searching than a sport or a hobby.
On the other hand though, I am an owner of an older (and apparently tougher) model -a Series2- and while it's strange quirks are part of the Land Rover legacy, at least I did not have to sell the rest of my life away for it. I do believe that if you are going to spend that much money on a piece of "state of the art" and new machinery, then that is exactly what you should get -state of the art with all of the bells and whistles working properly (otherwise you might as well have bought a 20 year old version).

I also draw the line at new machinery having fundamental flaws in it - like transmission problems. Land Rovers have a reputation for toughness, built on the older models. While they had unstoppable oil leaks and noisy gearboxes (etc..), you could rely on the fact that they would get you from A to B- a reassuring fact when you are 400 odd km's from the nearest water in the middle of the Namib desert. If that reputation is damaged by the newer vehicles, then all that you are left with is not a vehicle that you can trust your life to with a couple of endearing quirks, but an overpriced crock owned by a sucker.
