Normal vs Polyurethane bushes

Posted by Mike on September 12, 1997 at 08:03:42:

I am trying to find an objective view on the good and bad points of "normal" (i.e. steel and rubber) vs polyurethane shackle bushes - any views, bad experiences?
Also, I have recently bought a newly manufactured SWB chassis from Zimbabwe and have had it galvanized (hot dip) - the only thing is that the galvanising got into the holes for the shackle bushes. I have since bought an adjustable reamer to be able to widen the holes out to the right size again, but now I am unsure as to what tightness of fit to make it (I have bought polyurethane bushes for it too!)
How do you judge the fit? Is the fit important with the Poly bushes?

Also, can a poly-bush with ridges on each end be cut in two and inserted from both ends? Will it damage anything this way?

I am also going to have the same problem with the hole for the steering mechanism - how important is the fit for this? Can I just file it out?

I would appreciate anybody's experienced opinion on this..
Thanks, MikeB
