Hi Jack,
I concur, Bearing noises very likely, and probably big ends at that. Before slipping in some new shells, I would inspect block for damage where main caps fret against it due to harmonic vibration, probably started when it was new!
(I say this because I had a standard engine balanced once and it was waaayyy out from new!)
If the mains are damaged, a line bore is in order, and costly. I still maintain your cooling probs are a liner or head problem, and fitting new short motor will fix all. Go for a 4.6 if you do it, the torque increase is excellent, and the fuel bill remains the same. ( Fuel economy worries us in OZ, we pay $1.10 / litre here!!!) Choose a good cam, and fit only genuine followers. Port match all manifolds to heads, and try a bigger bore ehaust. She'll go well then!

Regards, JC
