Depending on your engine type AND age, the size, and possibly shape, of spanner varies.
A V8 with serpentine belt is 36mm Across Flats (AF) whereas I THINK earlier versions are 32mm.
Some diesel engines are 32mm, some 36mm.
Some couplings have a LH thread, some a RH thread.
To loosen, always move the spanner in the same direction the fan rotates. To determine this either spin the engine over, or look at a single fan blade, and move the spanner from the trailing edge to the leading edge of that blade.
www.difflock.com sell a 32mm cranked spanner, and a 36mm flat spanner, and an associated 'stop the thing turning' tool. There are pictues on the site if you want inspiration.
My engine has a 32mm nut, so I use an flat 1 1/4" AF spanner, and stop the pulley turning by jamming a flat bladed screwdriver between the head of one of the pulley securing bolts and the central boss. This works if things aren't too tight.
