The mass airflow sensor tells the ecu how much air is getting to the engine, and then matches with a proper amount of fuel. If the air flow is restricted, the ecu cuts the fuel volume. The ecu also watches the readout from the O2 sensors to see if the mixture is too lean or too rich. Actually it hunts continuously for a perfect mixture, and that's what makes the rpms 'pulse' at idle. If you listen closely you can hear it... Doug W. NAS D110 5.0L
