disco 1 anti-lock brakes deactivation

has anyone ever deactivated their antilock brakes for offroading or on icy roads.
winter of 03 as i came to a red light on ice i couldnt stop my disco for nothing.the anti lock system unlocked all four wheels i was standing on the pedal and had to turn off road into woods alowing deep snow to stop me.
very scary experience.
