The quick and easy is sometimes the best... Put the thermostat in anyway if it is over 2 years old.
In Australia, we have no closed loop control or cats on our 14cux systems, and running a disco V8 with a faulty thermostat results in flooding and massive fuel consumption for the first 5 miles or so!
