There are many people who have tried to get later models in (using various schemes), and many of those people have had the vehicles sent back at their expense! There is one way in which to do it that is legal. It's a cumbersome process, but people have done it: You can have a vehicle completely stripped-down and sent to the States as 'parts'. This is completely legal, and US Customs can't touch it. Once here, it can be reassembled. Most states have a 'kit car' classification that you can use when obtaining a title and registration. They will want a VIN number from the chassis, and that's it. I know of one person who has done this, and it went off without a hitch.
