Overheating will kill

If you have overheated the engine it could have damage done... when needle heads for HOT you should of shut it off at that moment, not driven any further until engine cooled and water was refilled. In extreme cases you can knock a cylinder liner lose or even hole pistons!
I really doubt the heads are damaged, warped maybe, but they can be machine surfaced. I'd have the valves & seats looked at, touched up if need be, then test valve spring poundage and replace ALL if low or high mileage
