Suffix A or B axles

Posted by cbt on December 14, 1998 at 08:16:00:

My '91 Range Rover Hunter needs the entire right front axle and swivel assembly replaced. My mechanic ordered suffix A parts to go with the suffix A differential. As he was beginning to install the new parts he realized the parts going in were not the same as the parts coming out. Turns out that suffix B parts (from the half shaft on out) were installed at the factory. Was this a common practice? Can you mix A and B parts on the same differential (i.e. B on the left, A on the right)? Is one a better series than the other? As I understand, the A spindle is serviceable whereas the B spindle is not. My inclination is to replace what was installed originally (B). I have been told by both Land Rover and an independent parts supplier that there should be no problem mixing A and B on the same differential. Any additional insights out there? Thanks in advance.
