I would first try and put heat sheilding between your 'cats' and t-case, if the shifter continues to get as hot you more than likely have a bad bearing that you can't hear. Sometomes you can diagnose bad 'cats' by driving the vehicle at a good clip and then finding somewhere good and dark to park, if one or both of the 'cats' glow like heated metal at all it's plugged.
