Oils for RR

Posted by Tomasz Konik on December 09, 1998 at 09:45:06:

Just before this winter I changed motor oil for Mobil 1 RF 5W-50. Before that the engine - V8 3.5 EFI with ZF auto - worked on mineral oil 15W-40 API SG. Engine - that millage was ca 200 000 km - was in good condition I changed oil becouse temperature in Poland sometimes reaches below -20 C. I often use my RR "stop and go", so fuel consumption started going down about 2-3 l/100km after oil change. But the problem is, that was said in my LR service that full synt. oil was terrible idea for the engine with such high milage. Serviceman told me that the only oil viscosity for my car is 20W-50 also during winter. Really? There is no oil consumption now and more leaks. Before oil change I had cleaned the carter and new oil filter (genuine) had been fitted.
There is another problem - gear oils. Is it a good idea to use Dextron IIE or III instead of IID in ZF auto? Next is the best viscosity for transfer case LT230 (RR '86). Now I use 80W-90 (GL-4)(???)
