The breather caps are slightly weighted so they will seal under their own weight. If they don't seal closed, when you drive through water that goes over the assembly, it will cool the axle assembly, cause a low pressure and draw water in via the non sealed breather. Most serious four wheel drivers fit an extension hose over the breather and take it up high so if it fails to seal, all it does is draw in air. This goes for the trans as well. HTH PeterW
