I think you refer to the LT85 gearbox manufactured by Santana in Spain during the 80's and early 90's. Two versions were done, the heavy duty with a solid central case and oil pump up to about '87, then the divided case lightweight without oil pump (depending on splash lube only) followed from about '88. Apparantly the 'box is very strong in the sense that it can take shocks and bumps etc, but the mainshaft bearings (deep groove ball bearings) does not like long distance cruising in 5th gear at high speed (120 km/h +). Here in South Africa especially the divided case boxes nearly all needed rebuilds before 100 000 km service. I know, I own a '89 110 V8 SW which is mainly used for long distance travel to destinations before the off-road stuff start. Rumour have it that the same happened in Oz. Is that true? Anyway, it seems that you must first decide what you want to use your vehicle for, then decide which gearbox will give the best service for the application. Regards.
