I'd advise persisting with the 12 point sockets, making sure the bolt heads are clean.
My car is a '95 P38 Range Rover and that's what fits.
Sorry, but I don't have direct Disco experience.

In general I suggest removing the front propshaft to accurately check the UJs, and while it's out, drive the car in 2WD mode by locking the centre diff, or letting the Viscous coupling take the strain, whichever is appropriate.
This also enables you to get a better feel of where play is in the front axle drive line.

If the clunk disappears the front diff is implicated, but also check the tightness of the radius arms to axle bolts. I don't have numbers to hand, but very tight then grunt a bit more is what you are aiming at, if you have neither number not torque wrench :-))
