Hydrastatic engine lock Posted by Blaine on December 01, 1998 at 07:23:43:
Anybody out there ever dealt with hydrastatic lock? I recently purchased a '91 Range Rover, 80,000 miles. Had the vehicle checked out by a mechanic who pointed out a few items needing repair or replacement (brake pads, rotors, swivel housing). Otherwise, it is a pretty clean RR. I've put 1800 miles on it since it was purchased. I was driving the vehicle and as I went up a hill, it died. I attempted to restart the engine but it just flooded. Turns out that the cylinders filled up with fuel. Each attempt to restart the engine just added more fuel to the cylinders until the pistons could no longer compress. The engine locked up. Also, when I would try to restart it, the a/c compressor clutch would click on and off (I live in Minnesota and the a/c was off!). Now, I could take it to the local dealer and have them tell me immediately what the problem is. But I don't want to wait for an appointment and I don't want to pay their inflated rates for parts and labor. Any insights/advice? Thanks in advance.
