How do you know its the diff?
Just because you jacked it up... etc., could very well be an axle shaft, common prob when they get old... should replace them every now & again. Anyway, you'll have to pull the diff to get the broken bit out, which is in the diff pinion wheel.
Drain oil, pull axles (3/8" BS socket ONLY!!!!! It IS NOT metric or American). If its a real Series II diff nuts will also be 3/8" BS (British Standard), remove diff... using a 1/4" dia drift drive out old broken bit. Clean out axle casing of junk. Check ring gear bolts (like to get lose).. also "BS" wrench & threads. R&R one at a time and use blue Loctite & re-torque to spec. Refit, refill w/ oil and you'r away... should take no more than an hour. MG
