Broken Diff.

Posted by WH on November 29, 1998 at 11:07:05:

Howdy, all,

Happy Thanksgiving! Mine was great, but could be better if I didn't break
my rear end (diff.?) that day. My 61 Series IIa SWB started to develop a clunking
noise in the back when I drove it around on Thanksgiving. I thought at
first that the fasteners on the drive shaft were lose again, however, it turned
out to be worse than that.

I jacked the rear end up and spinned one rear wheel manually. Normally,
the other wheel will turn in the opposite direction. Mine, however, just sat
there idly and jerked a little from time to time. While driving, I would occationally
heard a loud clunk with vibration coming from the rear and car would hesitiate a
bit. I could still drive the car in 2 wheel drive mode, but it was definately getting worse.

I believe that I have a broken rear differantial. My question now is two folded:

1) Can I replace the whole unit myself? I checked the repair manual and it looked
quite straight forward.

2) I also have a friend that has a Series IIa part car with both axes still on it. I can take either
the front or rear diff. from it. Are they the same? If so, I'll rather take the front
one since it tends to be used less. Also, how can I tell the ratio of the diff. externally?
Do I have to go in and count the gear teeth?

Thanks for your constant support,

Wayne
