Possibly worn syncro or incorrect oil grade or a combination of both. Wouldn't worry about it to much. Wrong grade of oil usally makes the shift worse when it is cold. Use correct grade of oil. ATF oil extends the use of a gearbox with worn syncro's. Although this may be what is meant to be in it (that is what my 96 Defender uses). For a repair you are looking at a rough approx 8hr's labour(don't quote) plus exchange box or rebuild, doing the clutch at the same would proberbly be wise too. I personally would change the oil and shift slower into 2nd, and think of it as character.
