unleaded

Posted by Jonathan Hanson on August 26, 1997 at 07:16:41:

Dear Bo:

If your engine has had hardened valve seats installed at some time, you can run unleaded gas with no problems. If the stock, unhardened seats are still in place, you can run unleaded too--but you'll need a valve job within about 5,000 miles. Without the lubricating properties that lead additives supply, the slamming of the valves into the seats quickly destroys them.

Unfortunately, I know of no way to tell if hardened seats are in place except by removing the head--but any mechanic could confirm which seats are installed with the head off.

There are lead replacement additives available, but they would be extremely expensive to use on a regular basis, unless you don't put very many miles on your 109. Hope this helps
