OK. I have a 99 series 1, so assuming they're the same.... The Cruise button is on the lower dash to the right of the wheel, and it has a symbol on it that resembles a picnic table, or a highway and an overpass, if you squint and close one eye. There's a light on it that illuminates when you push it in, and then the switches on the steering wheel work. The transfer case shifter basically has 5 positions, actually it's a figure 8 kind of thing but the middle is all neutral, so we'll say 5. Obviously the thing's all wheel drive when the diff isn't locked, but it still basically works like a 2hi/low 4hi/low system (like your Ford probably). bottom right is non locked, basically like 2 hi (what it should be in all the time on the highway). Upper right is like 2 low, non diff locked, but low range, for heavy, heavy towing or super steep paved downhill when you have no brakes (like you're ever going to run into that situation). Lower left (straight across from what we're calling 2 hi) is '4 hi' or diff lock high range, and upper left is '4 low' or diff lock low range. You're supposed to put the regular shifter in neutral before you shift the differential, but I've forgotton that step many times and it just acts a little more stubborn when going into gear when you don't. The buzzing alarm...it's supposed to scream at you when the diff shifter if in neutral, warning you that you're completely out of any and all gears. It should shut off when it goes into any gear, even diff locked gears. Basically if you picture the shifter motion like a backwards "C", that's all the motion you really use. the flat side of the backwards C is high and low range without the diff locked, and when you shift to the left (top or bottom), that's diff locked high and low. Come to think of it I don't even know if you can shift straight up from "High" to "Low" on the 'diff lock' side (which would make it a backwards "O"...I assume you probably can. But when the shifter is in the middle (not up or down), whether it's to the left or the right, it's going to scream at you to let you know that you're in transfer case neutral. There should be a classic looking orange 4x4 symbol on the dash when you're in diff lock mode (shifter to the left side). Hope that helps. (ps: I'd buy the thing) And don't feel bad I had mine for 2 weeks before I found out it had a CD changer under the seat.
