I would most certainly remove all of the stuff and provide yourself with the room you need to do the job right. The cork has a tendency to stick to both the valve cover surface and the engine side.

It is very important that you clean off all of the old gasket so you have a good surface for your new gasket. If you do not you may as well leave the leaking one on because the new one will soon be doing the same.

Bummer on all the work involved to get it done, but I think that you will be much happier if you do it right the first time.

Small tip...laytex gloves are the only way to go when working on greasy engines. Get the thickest ones that are available they work great.
