screeching at high revs from air intake. And Snorkel parts

Posted by ivor on December 28, 2003 at 13:06:21:

My recently purchased 110 3.5 V8 was converted (before I bought it) to a 200 Tdi. It looks like the engine was fitted on the V8 mounts as it sits a long way forward. As a consequence the air cleaner does not fit where it should.

There has always been a high-pitch and loud screaching noise, which I put down to the air cleaner and all the associated pipework not being fitted. I have just attached the air cleaner onto the inlet pipe and the noise is still there- although it seems to be not as bad. I have not got the rest of the pipework to connect the air cleaner to the air inlet on the wing.

Has anyone ever run a 200 Tdi engine without an air cleaner attached and if so have they come across this noise? If so, I can breathe a sigh of relief and be pretty sure that it will go away when I fit the other pipes. If you have heard this noise and it wasn't the sound of the unmuffled breathing of the engine, or you have an idea what it might otherwise be, I would be glad of some advice.

A little more info... the noise is always there when I am doing over 50 mph, but also if I am accellerating fairly heavily in lower gears. It does it at standstill if I heavily rev the engine. The sound definitely comes from the air inlet of the engine.

Also- with this Land Rover came an unfitted Safari Snorkel- but this has an open top- i.e. no cover to stop the rain pouring in and filling the engine up with water. Does anyone know where you can buy Safari Snorkel parts.
