Well, if it's a "tick-tick" noise it'll be the lifters.... if a "knocking" noise it could be a liner and/or a piston knocking, then once it heats up the parts will grow and stop making noise. You can test OIL PRESSURE by fitting a guage at the sender hole and see if oil psi is up to spec when could. Does it use water?
I doubt you'll have to repalce heads or block (unless a liner is lose then block is junk)...
