purge valve replaced

replaced purge valve on 99 disco2. The readout on the purge rate was up around 26-28 before the new part put in. (don't know what the measuring unit was, but that what the little computer box showed). After replacing, the purge rate was showing around 6-7.
But after driving off, and restarting, the "eng service lite" came on again.
Went to disco2 site on yahoo, looked at tech stuff, the purge value looks like it does affect the engine; or is it it just emmission output?. The mechanic said that this should not affect engine preformance, and should not hurt to drive it for awhile, should I worry about driving it around with this problem, or am I just throwing but emmisions into the air right now?
Also, the fault read "purge value stage fault"...but couldn't find this fault in the tech stuff. Can I get any input on this. I would hate to think that I would have to replace the whole ELC system. Is it a ECM problem (and how do you tell)? does the charcoal cannister have to be replaced? fuel sensor? PWM voltage seems to be working, you can hear the valve clicking. The car does not have any of the systems of a ELC failure, i.e., stalling, or running ruff at idle.
any help, thanks
