Reply to Joan's question of August 9

Joan:

I hope this isn't too late to help; I just discovered this page--uh, no pun intended.

To be brutally frank, your experiences with the Discovery, while perhaps a bit worse than usual, are in no way unique. Land Rover vehicles are some of the best engineered on the planet; however, they are also some of the most poorly assembled. Quality control problems have plagued Land Rovers since the mid-70s and the massive strikes at British Leyland.

I'd like to say that once you fix the problems you have now, your Discovery will settle down and be more reliable, but I can't. The new Land Rovers are, very simply, high-maintenance vehicles. I'm sure there are owners out there who've never had anything go wrong, but statistics prove my case. The three Land Rover products now being sold in the U.S. consistently fall at the bottom of any reliability survey.

Sometimes I wish Land Rover could have Toyota manufacture its products; they would likely rule the world.
