Glow plugs will pull over 60amps so if the battery is not in a good state of charge, thats enought to give the slow cranking. When you hook the other battery up, does the cranking speed increase and the vehicle starts easier???

Next time, place a voltmeter across the battery terminals and measure the voltage before the glow plugs are switched on; after the glow plugs switch out; and when cranking.
