It's the output shaft from the transmission to the transfer box. Since I posted the original note the regional LR rep offered to pay for two parts (main shaft and gear - $800) but it must be repaired by the local dealer who estimates $2,250 for labor. The vehicle is presently at an independent shop that only works on British products and they say they can do it all, including the new parts for less than $2,000. Still, I'm outraged that the "world's best 4X4" could lose a shaft from mostly highway driving. On top of that the local dealer is uncooperative, rude and can't get to the repair for at least two weeks.
