slipping alternater belt

I have a landrover rangerover 1990 it keeps eating up
belts when you first start up not all the time but some
times it slips so bad you can smell rubber burning i
tighten it up about every two weeks. after it slipps
real good it even slipps when you give it the gas. its
the aternater belt iv used after market belts they are
a 1/8 inch less in width they burn up real fast i have a
rover belt on it now its been a month it is already 1/8
inch less in width.why is the belt smaler gauge than the
other belts?Helpppp?
