Underwater Disco

I have an early 93 registered UK spec 200 Discovery Tdi. When I drive through anything more than a wet road , ie: large puddles etc the charging light comes on for a few seconds and then gradually fades . As we're having a very wet Autumn at the moment this is happening all too frequently . I now slow down to less than 20mph or even less for almost all standing water when other ordinary cars are hardly braking at all. One other symptom that might be relevant is a screech at the same time as the light coming on , identical to the noise heard when a water pump bearing is on the way out but much quieter. Last night driving through heavy rain a truck coming from the other direction sent a wave of flood water right over the roof and bonnet and again the light came on . (The noise doesn't always put in an appearance). Could it be the alternator contacts being shorted out by the water or the belts slipping when water gets onto the pulleys? When I had to wade a flood last night approx 18" deep and very slowly the light still came on , I though L/R's were built to take wading in their stride. Is this a normal problem with discos or is it a sign of some other problem. Appreciate some clues before the local L/R specialist draws a blank and still charges me a fortune! TIA Lloyd
