Rust hole in Series IIa frame

Posted by Wayne H. on November 02, 1998 at 22:12:55:

Howdy, all,

While I was painting and cleaning the frame of my Series IIa last weekend, I uncovered a rusted hole about 1 inch in diameter inside the left rear spring hanger. Appearently that that spring hanger had been trapping a small amount of mud and salt inside. The hanger looks quite solid and I'm not concerned about the structure integraty. However, the hole is an open invitation for mud and salt to get inside the frame and rotting it from inside out. I had put a pair of mini-mudflaps around the hangers to prevent the spray from rear tires to get into the hanger again. I had also tried to spray/brush on various rust treatments to the area. In order to repair/seal off the hole, the hanger has to be cut off the re-welded after the hole is patched. Has anyone out there has similar rust problem in his/her LR? How can I take care of it? Had I done all I can do and I should just leave it alone? Help!
