Land Rover Owner International magazine in May 1998 did a large tyre test on Defender 90 vehicles and tested the Trac Edge tyre in 235/85R16 size. They recommended 28psi front and 35psi rear for DEFENDER 90. However, I did not rate their test (and quite a few other friends and tyre shops agreed) and thought it very biased towards General Grabber / BFG.
I run Michelin O/R 750R16 tyres on my DEFENDER NAS90 usually 28 to 30psi all round on road and 18 to 20 psi off-road and 265/75?R16 BFG Radial A/T for sand and Posing with Alloys! usually 38 psi rear and 32 psi front (I think this is the L-R recommended pressure which I use) and 15 psi off-road on sand.
In fact the LRO report ran the Michelins at 28psi front and 40 psi rear and said "Not a great road tyre with poor levels of cornering and braking ability. We'd restrict it to off-road use only." At 40 psi rear no wonder they said this!!!!
Personally I would start with the pressures that Mike Green has suggested and adjust the pressures until you feel comfortable with the handling in all types of weather and road surface. My Michelin pressures have been tuned over a 12 month period.
