You may have broken the little "bob weight" springs in the mechanical advance of the distributor. These can be a little hard to get - try Rovers North. I would pull the distributor out (after scratching a mark so you can put it back in the same spot) remove the points, remove the rotor, remove the screw in the top of the spindle and remove the spindle and cam. You should then be able to get into the bottom of the distributor and see what is going on. The distributor is a Lucas 25D and these were used in all sorts of British 4 cylinder care from Morris Minors, Minis, Rover 2000, Austin, Triumph and so on. You might be able to find one at a wrecker. They wear on the spindle because no one ever oils them as recommended and then the timing goes all erratic. In you case, it sounds a little worse than just wear if this is what the problem is. I just looked in my Rovers North cattledog and they will sell you one for $227.50.
