1993 Range Rover losing power

I just recently purchased a 1993 Range Rover LWB with 130k ans it has proven to be an EXCELLENT auto until very recently.
About 2 months ago, I hopped in and started to drive off and things were normal. When I got a hill ( 3 min. after driving), it really started to struggle and strain until I punched the gas. It was fine after that. Now, the problem seems to be more frequent and joined with a few backfire-like pops. It loses power like this for maybe 15 seconds at max and then goes back to normal.
I have never been a "do it yourselfer" but would like to try and have no fear of getting dirty - I just need to be pointed in the right direction about this. Any and all advice would be helpful.
