It depend what you are painting the vheicle for;
If you are after a good show/restoration/on-road use only finish then you will really need to spray paint to get looking result.

If it is a working vehicle that you are going to be using for what they are intended for (off roading) and it is proberly going to get a bit of abuse then just hand paint it. You can do touch ups to the paint job quickly and easily if it has been hand painted, power wash off the mud/dust/grime and quick roughen up of the damaged surface and slap a bit more paint straight on, give it a couple of days and you won't see it. You can't touch up a spray job that quickly.
Here on the farm I tend to use Ford Tractor enamel, they make a range of Land Rover original colours. I use the standard blue or bronze green, a good hard wearing paint that is quick to dry
