350 Conversion 1991 Range Rover

Posted by eldave 91RR on April 01, 2003 at 11:39:40:

I posted this over at RoversNorth and I visit this site infrequently. However, I'm trying to drum up as much info as possible. My engine blew up recently and I'm snooping around the web for ideas. Thanks.

I did a search here for other posts on this and came up with very little. I went out and grabbed a handful of links, but would appreciate any info people could post here regarding the 350 conversion. Links, comments, your experience etc.

So far the brand new 4.0 LR short block seems like the best option out there for me, but if I'm about to drop $4 grand or so I might as well at least try to educate myself.

I have some buddies that are trying to push me the way of the 350 conversion. Specifically the LT1. Better gas mileage, much more power, regular gas, more reliable etc. are things I'm hearing. Ofcourse they could be talking me into a nightmare of complications at no risk to them, but it has me intruiged. I think the LT1 has an aluminum head too.

Actually, I'm just going to post one of the emails from a friend. Watch out he's a little harsh on the rover engine. I think the bellhousings match up from what I've already found out there.
----------------------------------------------
The chevrolet LT1 is the last evolution of the old 350 block.

300 horsepower, about 370 ft/lbs of torque, port fuel injection, 32 bit
computer.

Found in the corvette, camaro, firebird and trans-am.

Distributor driven? sorta. optical ignition. computer controlled. runs
on regular unleaded.... did i mention 300 horsepower, better fuel economy
than you get now, more reliable, and 300 horsepower?

As far as O2 sensors, and any sensor for that matter, there's a company
called painless wiring that makes aftermarket harnesses for retrofitting
engines into cars they didn't come in. everything from the computer to key
switch is all integrated , color coded, and labeled.

Basically your engine is a small 350, so most of the senders and such should
be about the same.

For around 2K, you could have a 60K LT1, with the ECU, with all accessories
hanging off of it ready to lower into your engine bay.

It's just that i think for what they want for those sh1tty rover engines, you
could have a quiet, reliable, absolute beast. it would definitely be more
trouble, but aren't you an engineer? and you do have that other car to
drive...

Find out if the bellhousings match, you could have a
turnkey LT1 with twice the power, almost twice the torque and better gas
mileage than any sh1tty rover engine. Did i mention cheap GM parts, and
they don't hemmorhage fluid?
