Rover makes its own diffs and axles.

A Detroit locker will make a Range Rover handle very strangely. They should not be used with permanent four wheel drive

The ARB is good but as you say $$$.

An alternative is Jack McNamara Diffs make a stronger gear carrier for Rover (and other) diffs. They have agents in the US. See their site at http://home.mira.net/~mcnamara/products.html for more info. They have a very good reputation.
