Have your alt tested by a reliable source. I had the same problems w/ a 92 Rangie 3.9l w/ 150k miles.
I bought a used alt @ the junk yard, put it in and had the orig Lucas alt rebuilt and all is ok. I also had the junk yard alt rebuilt. Now I have an extra.
